Review of attainment measures in literacy, mathematics and science
The EEF commissioned the Centre for Global Learning: Education and Attainment at Coventry University to undertake a systematic review of attainment measures to identify and evaluate available measures for pupils aged 6-18 in the following domains: literacy, mathematics and science.
The aim of this review was to provide publicly available guidance on selection of appropriate measures of attainment in each subject (literacy, mathematics and science), paired with accessible summaries about the range and nature of the assessments available. Selected questions from the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA) review model for the description and evaluation of psychological and educational tests were used to evaluate assessments. This information has been summarised within a searchable and publicly available database, and accompanied by a written synthesis outlining the systematic review methodology used to form the database.
Specifically, the research questions were:
- How can teachers and evaluators assess attainment and progress in literacy, mathematics and science in the UK?
- What is the psychometric quality and implementation utility of the assessments identified through this review for use with pupils aged 6 to 18-years-old?
